Biofeedback is a therapeutic procedure that incorporates computer-modulated information to help individuals learn to regulate their internal muscular and nervous systems. The objective is to help people develop greater awareness of, confidence in, and control over their physiological processes that are otherwise outside of awareness. Biofeedback uses electrodes placed on the surface of the skin which as sensors for measuring activities such as breath-rate, heart rhythms, and minute changes is muscle activity. By becoming familiar with the body's signals or sensations, an individual can develop new ways of responding to problems as they occur.
Biofeedback training has an important role to play in stress management. By physiologically calming ourselves, we gain the ability to influence or reprogram our nervous system. The information from the biofeedback equipment helps people see clearly how their body reacts to stress. In order to release unwanted tension, therapy includes a variety of stress reduction techniques such as breathwork, muscle relaxation, yoga-based stretching, and heart-rhythm exercises. Biofeedback training combined with these mind-body strategies helps individuals move towards better health. For example, developing efficient breathing patterns and then coordinating this practice with rhythmic heart oscillations has profound implications for improving performance and preventing disease. Biofeedback services are offered by a licensed Occupational Therapist. |
