Breath and Posture
The average person will take over 100 million breaths in their lifetime Upper chest breathing is highly inefficient, but it is the predominant pattern of breathing for most humans. As a response to stress, we tend to hold our breath, or breathe very shallowly. This causes us to use the muscles of the upper chest to elevate the ribs, and to contract the upper trapezius muscles, leading to chronic tightness in the shoulders and neck. Relaxed breathing, on the other hand, occurs by expanding the abdomen on inhalation, and compressing the abdomen on exhalation. Our natural way of breathing involves using the diaphragm to make space in the chest cavity to fill with air. Breathing in this way helps the spine flex and extend, and the ribs to expand. The abdominal contents are massaged with the movement of the diaphragm, which aids in digestion and absorption. The muscles that tend to carry unnecessary tension can let go. Stress reaction and the fast pace of life have caused many to breathe inefficiently. Improper breathing can lead to physical, emotional and intellectual deficits. Having good energy and endurance during the day is made possible by coordinating breathing rhythms with posture and movement. In addition to core strength and good alignment, healthy posture depends on the ability to relax the neuromuscular system at will and allow the body to rejuvenate. Breathing efficiently balances emotions, reduces tension, and boosts the immune system. It helps bring the body and mind into coherence. Postural Dysfunction means that something is not working right. Problems are more likely to happen when posture is unbalanced or awkward positions are held for too long. The result can be fatigue and strain. Prevention of pain and injury can be achieved by properly positioning the spine and extremities. Using healthy posture is like holding a defense shield against future aches and pains. When your joints are positioned in their safe or neutral postures - and when you can release stress quickly and efficiently, the body works like an elegant machine. An integrated approach to posture and breathing allows the body to work safely, more productively, and with greater pleasure. Goals
